What is Klaviyo?

Klaviyo is an email and SMS marketing platform built around ecommerce data. Rather than treating contacts as a flat list, it pulls in everything a store knows about a customer, what they viewed, bought, and abandoned, and uses that to drive targeted, automated messaging across both email and text.

Over the past few years it has become close to the default choice for Shopify stores in particular, and it now positions itself as a full customer-data platform rather than just an email tool. That ambition explains both its power and its pricing.

Who is Klaviyo for?

After two weeks of hands-on use, Klaviyo is a strong fit if you are:

  • An ecommerce store that wants email and SMS driven by real purchase data.
  • A Shopify merchant who wants the deepest available native integration.
  • A marketer who’ll use advanced segmentation and predictive analytics.

It’s probably not the right pick if you only send a basic newsletter, aren’t running a store, or want predictable low costs, the price climbs with your list and usage.

Hands-on testing

We ran Klaviyo through three real jobs: syncing a Shopify store, building a welcome flow, and creating a predictive segment.

Shopify sync. Connecting the store was fast, and Klaviyo immediately began ingesting order and browsing data. The depth of data it captures stood out, this is clearly the platform’s foundation, and it surfaces details that general tools simply don’t track.

Welcome flow. The automation builder let us assemble a branching welcome series with conditional splits based on whether someone had purchased. Pre-built flow templates meant we weren’t starting from scratch, and the logic was easy to follow once we got oriented.

Predictive segment. Building a segment of customers predicted to buy soon was genuinely impressive, the predictive analytics are a real differentiator and exactly the kind of targeting that justifies the platform for serious stores.

The takeaway: Klaviyo’s data and automation are best-in-class for ecommerce. The cost is the catch, and it rises faster than many expect.

Key features

  • Ecommerce data, deep native syncing with Shopify and other store platforms.
  • Email + SMS, both channels managed and automated from one place.
  • Segmentation, granular targeting by behavior, purchase, and engagement.
  • Predictive analytics, forecasts like next-order date and customer lifetime value.
  • Pre-built flows, abandoned-cart, welcome, and win-back automations ready to go.

Ease of use

Klaviyo is more involved than a simple newsletter tool, and that’s by design, the power comes with complexity. That said, the interface is well organized, onboarding is solid, and pre-built flows ease the start. Expect to invest some time learning segmentation and the flow builder, but the day-to-day experience is smooth once you’re past the initial curve.

Klaviyo vs other email marketing tools

Against Drip, Klaviyo wins on SMS and market presence while Drip’s interface is arguably cleaner, both are strong ecommerce choices. Against MailerLite, the comparison is really about fit: MailerLite is far cheaper and simpler but lacks Klaviyo’s ecommerce depth. See our Drip review and MailerLite review, or our roundup of the best email marketing software for the wider picture.

Pricing note: email marketing pricing scales with your list size and changes often , verify current plans on Klaviyo’s site before subscribing.

Is Klaviyo worth it?

If you run an ecommerce store and will use its data, segmentation, and automation, Klaviyo is worth the price, it’s the category leader for good reasons and the free plan lets you test it first. If you only need newsletters or want predictable, low costs, Klaviyo is more than you need, and a simpler, cheaper tool will serve you better.

Frequently asked questions

Is Klaviyo worth it in 2026?

For ecommerce stores that will use its data, segmentation, and automation, yes, Klaviyo is the category leader for good reason. For simple newsletters or non-store use, it's expensive overkill and a tool like MailerLite is a better fit.

Does Klaviyo have a free plan?

Yes. Klaviyo's free plan covers up to 250 contacts and 500 email sends per month with Klaviyo branding, which is enough to test the platform before paying.

How much does Klaviyo cost?

Email plans start at $20/month and scale by contact count; adding SMS starts around $35/month and is billed by usage on top. Costs rise quickly as your list grows, so check Klaviyo's site for current pricing.

Is Klaviyo good for Shopify?

Yes, Klaviyo's Shopify integration is among the deepest available, syncing customer, product, and order data to power highly targeted segments and automated flows.

The bottom line on Klaviyo

Klaviyo is the de facto standard for ecommerce email and SMS, with deep store data and powerful automation. It's worth it for serious online stores, though costs climb quickly and the depth is overkill for simple lists.
