Hands-on testing

We ran SEMrush through three jobs: a keyword research sprint for a new site, a full site audit, and a competitor traffic teardown.

Keyword research. The Keyword Magic Tool returned large, well-segmented lists with intent labels and useful filters. Volume and difficulty estimates lined up with what we saw elsewhere, and the clustering made it easy to map topics to pages.

Site audit. The crawler flagged the usual technical issues clearly and prioritized them by severity. It’s not the fastest crawler, but the reporting is readable and the fixes are explained well enough for non-technical teammates.

Competitor analysis. This is where SEMrush shines. Traffic estimates, top pages, and keyword gaps gave a genuinely useful read on rivals. The numbers are estimates, not analytics truth, but they’re consistent enough to guide strategy.

The takeaway: SEMrush’s data is solid across the board rather than best-in-class at any one thing. What you’re really buying is the breadth, having every tool one click away.

Ease of use

There’s no getting around it: SEMrush has a learning curve. The first login is intimidating because so many tools are visible at once. That said, each individual tool is well designed, the onboarding projects help, and once you settle into the three or four features you actually use daily, it becomes second nature.
